Carol Ann Duffy

The big picture

Duffy reimagines the abandoned bride from Great Expectations. The speaker remains trapped between longing and hatred, with the failed wedding invading her body, dreams and language.

A few words worth knowing
“Beloved sweetheart bastard.”

Affectionate names collide with an insult without an explanatory transition. The compressed opening makes love and hostility simultaneous, establishing the conflict that the speaker cannot resolve.

Whose voice are we hearing?
An intense dramatic monologue exposes conflicting feelings rather than providing a detached account.
How does it develop?
Regular stanzas contain unstable syntax and enjambment. Disrupted speech culminates in a broken final word, making emotional damage audible instead of merely describing it.
A reading trap to avoid
Distinguish the fictional speaker from Duffy. Naming an oxymoron is not a substitute for explaining its emotional conflict.
